The Money Trick

The Money Trick had a very interesting premise, especially starting at the first line. Owen says, “Money is the real cause of poverty.” I was wondering exactly what that meant, since I was not sure where the story was going to go. Once the story got more involved, talking about the separation between the capitalist and the working class, the class distinctions played a large part throughout. I thought it was interesting how it put a large-scale problem into a smaller scale, with Owen representing the capitalists, and a few other characters representing the working class. I think it made it easier to comprehend, since when large figures are involved, it’s difficult to picture it in real terms.

The piece made a societal problem very evident – how people can work and work, yet the capitalists will get all of the gain. Even though the working class did their jobs, they are still in poverty. It’s an endless cycle, where the government is not giving these people even enough money to survive. When taxes and other cuts occur in paychecks, it’s impossible for people to get into an income bracket that’s actually survivable. I did like the story, and how issues were simplified through the writing.
