China Blue Movie

It was really difficult to watch the young youth in the denim factory, performing medial tasks for little or no pay. It made me mad at how badly they were being treated when it came to working hours. They sometimes had to work from 8am until 2am if it were overtime, which is absolutely ridiculous and so unethical. It seems so unhealthy that businesses can be run this way, but it's hard to change a system that has been in place for so long. As I was watching, I couldn't help but think about the jeans I was wearing, and see how stupid it was that I'm buying products that people have to work so hard to make in bad conditions. I felt pretty guilty actually.

The Jasmine character in the film is pretty powerful. I felt so bad when she was talking about how her parents were probably disappointed that she was born a boy, instead of a girl. I think in China boys are prasied much more highly than girls, so she felt it necessary to go to work for her family. I found it disgusting that the factory deducted food costs from their pay, as well as deducting pay for each minute a worker is late. It all seems so unethical, putting 12 girls together in one room to sleep in, with just one bathroom. I can't believe that many of Jasmine's roomates are as young as 14, coming and working for their families at such a small age. The culture is extremely different than the United States, so I guess I don't exactly understand how these people can tolerate such treatment, but that is the way things are run in the country. I feel very lucky to be born into a country where conditions are good for the most part.
