This is a piece of legislature that really scares me. It was interesting to read that flyer "The FBI is on the phone." It made a list of exactly all the amendments that are being broken since this came into power, including the first, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and 14th. I feel as though the information gathered about people could be misinterpreted in the wrong way, and innocent people will get blamed for crimes they haven't committed, such as what has already happened. The thing about the FBI tapping my phone lines seems so movie-esque, as though it's something that we wouldn't see in our day-to-day lives...but it IS something we are seeing and witnessing. If an authority enters a conversation mid-way through and hears something potentially threatening, that statement could be taken COMPLETELY out of context. Our liberties are slowly being taken away and producing a "Big Brother" effect on communities. The idea of being spied on is creepy, and even though I have nothing to hide it still could feel like everything I do or type is wrong.
This reminded me in some ways of an article in the Ithacan, which talked about how sites like Facebook actually keep all of a user's information in their database, instead of refreshing it every month or so like other sites. So in theory, everyone's drunk pictures or other "incriminating" photos that they post still remain on a server even after they delete them, which definitely could be used against them, especially through the Patriot act. Nothing is really secure on the internet or now even through real transactions, so you can never be too careful these days. The government is so hypersensitive since 9/11, and there is a right to be, but overstepping boundaries just isn't right.
